About two weeks ago, I installed the latest updates for Win81, and my problems with the Classic Start began.
Every few minutes (2-10 minutes, varies), the desktop disappears, along with the task bar. It comes back, first with the standard Windows Start icon, then the Classic Start icon. Clicking the latter, it says it is still gathering info. Eventually, it works normally, until the cycle repeats.
I thought this might be the Windows Explorer crashing and taking Classic Start with it. But when I uninstalled Classic Shell, Windows became stable: the desktop did not go away, and the Win81 Start menu (which is useless to me) worked reliably. Reinstalling Classic Shell 4.2.1 (which I had before), the problems came back.
Is this a known problem? Is there a fix or workaround, aside from removing Classic Shell?
Windows 8.1 on MS Surface Pro 1, using external monitor (Dell), keyboard, and mouse. Windows is up to date, and indeed I think it was a recent update that caused the problems to begin.
