I still use the original Win 10 start menu, from time to time.

Why does Microsoft hide the folder icon, providing a blank square instead?

...are you sure that isn't just a bug?

It's normal Win10.
Should be practically bugless.
After coming out of sleep mode many hours later, the folder icons show up.
Some of the folders icons inside the folder are blank for a few seconds, then show folder icons.
Must be refreshing at a very slow rate.
Weird.
Time to go back to Classic Shell Menu. :)

Windows 10's Start Menu is poorly coded. Don't use it. For example, if an icon handler shell extension is installed (Microsoft's own documented shell extensibility mechanism for showing custom icons in Explorer), it breaks all icons in the Windows 10 menu for that particular file type.

Well MamBa,
I'm going to put it down to all the little micro updates that happen anywhere from a couple days,
to a couple of weeks in between.
Looking at my update history, last update was on same day I complained.
Didn't see any update restart notification.
I have shut down computer once since then. It is working all fine again.
