I think the buttons are just larger in Start8, look at my comparison:

Even when I set the max icons to 9 (or lower)

I couldn't find a name for it, I meant this:
The buttons don't stretch out until the bottom of the bar

Just switched from Start8 to Classic Shell.
One thing I noticed was that the context menu buttons are vertically smaller than in Start8, which makes me miss-click them sometimes.
Is it possible to make them larger?
