Now, how do we get rid of the Seattle SkyThingy screen that shows up first on startup, requiring one to hit a key to get into the logon prompt?

I have just attempted all of the suggestions, and was able to create a new Quick Launch taskbar on the Win8 machine. It states "Quick Launch" there. However, it does not have the shortcuts viewable immediately to click on from the bottom bar - one has to click the " >> " to have ...

Wait, your post title says taskbar small icons? Do you want small icons on the taskbar? Right click an empty area of the taskbar and check the "Use small taskbar buttons" option. Yes, I want the small shortcut icons on the taskbar, like XP has. Basically Classic Shell is allowing the icon...

hmm, if you imported your settings from w7 to w8, and it didn't change anything. maybe your DPI settings are off,try navigating to: "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display" on both systems and see if they match, if-not this is an actual bug. This was a fresh install of Win8. I will...

im guessing the default one is windows vista/windows 7 Actually, it's the white flower on a blue background for Win8. Not sure what options are there, as the selection process is so convoluted...! Will try playing around with the Win8 themes and try to get something working - thanks for the advice!...

I always use the Classic theme with Classic Shell.

However, on the Win8 machine, I am just using the default one - which theme would allow this to work?

On my Win7 machine, I'm able to configure Classic Shell to show small icons like on XP, but when I installed it on my Win 8 machine, it does not allow me to do so - I cannot see any configuration options for this...

Can anyone assist/advise?
