In my honest opinion, Classic Shell is not needed in Windows 10 because finally we have an excellent Start Menu built in which in my opinion is better than the Win 7 one. I stopped using CS a while back but have just reinstalled it for one reason only, to change the Start Button. If someone could ju...

In Windows 10 build 10061 with Classic Shell 4.2.1, the Metro Apps do not show up. If I choose to show them in the menu as a list, it says the list is empty and shows nothing. In All Programs, opening the Apps folder also shows nothing.

You also may have to select the option in Classic Shell to replace the Windows Start button. On my system, that option was off by default. Probably because Windows 8 didn't have a Start Button.

The list should automatically scroll down when you move your mouse pointer to the bottom of it.

Windows 8 only boots fast if you have fast boot enabled. This also requires hibernation to be enabled because fast boot actually uses a form of hibernation . Since disabling hibernation is one of the first things I do on every computer to save HDD space, my Win8 machine with it's 80GB hard drive doe...

You also have to choose to replace the Windows Start button in Classic Shell settings. I found that turned off by default.

Just as a heads up. The 8.1 update causes massive HDD fragmentation and also shatters the registry into many pieces. My registry was in 45 pieces. I did a boot time defrag with Puran to fix that. Slower boot times which gradually improve could be due to fragmentation that the built in Windows defrag...

After doing the 8.1 Windows upgrade, Classic Shell 4.0 would not load. I had to uninstall and reinstall it to get it to work again.

I updated to 4.0 and all my settings were retained. I even uninstalled the previous version and rebooted before running the new installer. I never did a backup so didn't have an XML file.

However, my previous version was the 3.9.3 beta so that may be why my results were different.

I thought the main point of Classic Shell was to give you a functional Start button in Windows 8. If you don't want it, why even use CS?

I myself prefer using icons on the desktop for my most used things, but for the others like the tools and less used things, I need the Start button.

So this issue seems to have resolved itself automagically. I am sure SmartScreen didn't stop flagging it as malware because the EXE developed the app reputation that SmartScreen needs. Internals build links which couldn't have been downloaded by anyone else and which were also getting flagged as da...

I use XP, Win7 and Win8. In Xp, just old games now with a very chopped up menu. Passed on Vista. At the time, could not get my head around that new menu. Man is Vista a beautiful resource hog. I don't understand why you guys just don't use Windows 7. It is the best Windows OS. (IMO) In my case, I got a really good deal on a copy of Win8 Pro ($32) and I used it to replace XP on this older laptop. I have a newer more powerful laptop with Win7 64 bit and I agree that it is great. The facts ...

Well, initially you reported that you installed 3.9.3 over 3.9.1. Then it was the uninstaller for 3.9.1 that was trying to restart Explorer. Which was precisely my point - this behavior (sometimes Explorer dying during uninstall) is not new for 3.9.3. It has been like that for all previous versions...

You don't get locked up. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to start Task Manager, close, then restart Explorer.exe. Although the average user may not know what to do in this case. He'll ask in the forums. :) In most cases if Classic Explorer (the Explorer plugin) is not installed, then the installer will quickl...

First--no it was the uninstaller for 3.9.3 that did it. When I restarted Explorer, CCleaner reported that 3.9.3 was the version installed so it was that uninstaller that caused the same issue. Second, I never install the Classic Explorer or the Classic IE modules. Third, I didn't say it locked up, j...

So, if you remove the option to have the programs automatically closed and reopened, then the problem disappears. You may need to do a reboot but that's preferable to having what amounts to being a locked up system where you can't do anything. Even a required reboot would be better, whether it was a...

I went to install it over 3.9.1 and it said things including Windows Explorer needed to be shut down and gave me the option to have them automatically shut down or not. To avoid the need for rebooting, I chose to have them ...

I agree, CSM makes Win 8 much more usable. Especially since every time you open a desktop application, you go to the desktop UI anyway but it seems crippled. I don't care for most of the Metro apps myself and really only ever use two of them, the Weather one and the eBay one. I have my system boot t...

Open an Explorer window, then paste this in the address bar: shell:::{4234d49b-0245-4df3-b780-3893943456e1} Do you see any Metro apps there? This is not true. Every other version of Windows show the frequently used, not recent programs. The latest beta version 3.9.0 has an option to select which programs to see - frequent (including ones from desktop or elsewhere), or recent (but only from the start menu). With any of those options, the...

If the main start window doesn't show any apps, you have bigger problems than Classic Shell. Is it possible you disabled UAC in the registry? Apps don't work without UAC. UAC is on it's default settings. I'm talking about the Classic shell menu that opens when you click on the Start button. There i...

Currently, recent programs only show in the list when you open them through the Start Menu. I would like to see them get added when opening them through a desktop shortcut as well. This is the behavior in every other version of Windows.
